About Us

"Class of 1970"

Collinsville High School

Collinsville, Illinois

"The Home of the Kahoks"

Our class of 544 graduating seniors was the second last to graduate from the original high school. Our commencement was held on May 29 in the CHS gym--no air-conditioning. Because of space limitations, we were issued only 3 guest seat tickets; because of time constraints, we walked up in rows to receive our diplomas.

In 1971, underclassmen attended the "new high school," located at 2201 S. Morrison Ave.

Collinsville (Township) High School was built in 1908 in the 1200 block of Vandalia Street. Our football bowl, constructed by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) during the Great Depression, was located across the street. An old understreet tunnel connected the school from the football field. This football field, now leveled, is currently the site of an ATM for the FCB bank. The Sun-Life Church eventually purchased the closed high school, holding a Christian school in the main building and a church in the gym. The Navigation Church currently occupies the facility.

"Who's Who" Staff during our Senior year:

  • Mr. Edmund Phelps was our principal.

  • Our class sponsors were Mr. Bill Nunes and Mr. Richard Crabtree .

  • Sports were led during our senior year by Coach Virgil Fletcher (basketball), Coach Frank Pitol (football), Coach Harry Lang (cross country), Coach Tom Miofsky (wrestling), Coach Don Davisson (baseball), Coaches Fletcher and Pitol (track), Coach Bill Blue (golf), Coach Barry Wilbur (tennis), and Mrs. Jane Pfaff (cheerleading sponsor).

  • Mr. Neal Strebel was the band director, and Mrs. Rhonda Gibson directed the Chorus.

  • Publication sponsors were Mrs. Carolyn Lindsey (Kahokian, our yearbook) and Miss Jeanna Funkhouser (The Kahoki, our student newspaper).

Just a few memories of our senior year. . . you may email any additional Senior year school memories !

  • We experienced our Freshmen year either at North Junior High or Webster Junior High, depending on where we lived in the Unit 10 district. We then attended CHS for our Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years.

  • "We are the Kahoks, the mighty, mighty Kahoks!" And we will always be Kahoks!

  • "Purple, white, fight!"

  • We even had a Kahok Princess and a Kahok Chief who performed at activities.

  • The dress code required girls to wear skirts, dresses, or culottes not over a measured length above the knee--no pants allowed! Boys wore slacks and tucked-in shirts--no T-shirts or blue jeans.

  • Each year we elected ten classmates to our Executive Board. Mike Ray was our Class President. Our Junior-year Executive board planned and held the 1969 Junior Senior prom, a "Night in Paris," at Union Station, St. Louis.

  • Every year, each homeroom elected a representative for Student Council.

  • We battled elbow-to-elbow crowds in challenging one-way halls during three (?)-minute class changes.

  • The school building had air-conditioning only in the school offices. The language classes on the shaky third floor could be either extremely hot or cold!

  • Homecoming activities included Pep Week, a bonfire at Woodland Park, a parade through town with floats built by student organizations, the football game with powder puff cheerleaders during half-time, a Sock Hop in the "Girls' Gym," and the culminating "Camelot" Homecoming coronation and dance in the gym.

  • Yes, we had separate gyms. The boys had access to the main gym; P.E. for girls was held in the little side gym.

  • Title 9 had not yet taken effect (It was enacted in 1972 with a sex discrimination provision in 1975). Except for cheerleading, girls had no access to a sports program.

  • Four busloads and carloads of fans cheered our basketball team our senior year at super-sectional. Heart-broken by a second-overtime loss to St. Anthony Bulldogs of Effingham, our team will always remain "Number 1" to us!

  • We had very talented classmates.

    • The Speech department sponsored the play "The Odd Couple," and "My Fair Lady" was the first musical presented by CHS.

    • Homeroom began with morning announcements by the P.A. Staff, students who either were speech contest winners or officers of the speech club.

    • Chorus members produced and performed in Webster Auditorium the 29th annual variety show, Amo! Amasha!

    • Art students participated in a three-week art exhibit at SIU Edwardsville. This art exhibit was the first one CHS ever held.

    • The Student Council sponsored their annual variety show, " CHS Performs at the Purple Palace," in the gym on April 4. Individuals and groups competed for the talent prize, won by Jeff Rinehart for his impersonation of Mark Twain.

  • Our Senior Class sponsored the second annual Basketball Dance on February 28, featuring our basketball queen and court.

  • Our Junior-Senior Prom was held at Fisher's Restaurant, Belleville, which was sadly demolished in 2019. Its theme was "Scarborough Fair."

  • Tepee, our local teen venue on 716 W. Main Street, was a favorite hangout every weekend, treating us with live bands.

  • The Tepee board sponsored the annual May Dance and Coronation on May 16 with a "San Francisco by Trolley" theme.

  • Some CHS students and faculty members marched down Vandalia Street to a peace rally in Woodland Park on May 15. The main topic was the Vietnam issue.

  • Many classmates had their senior pictures taken by Ralph Haury. His Vandalia Street location is now occupied by Cost Less Copy Center.

  • "A Time for Us" was the theme of our Senior Assembly held in the gym, reliving memories and highlights of our four years of high school..

  • Our baccalaureate was held on May 25th at St. John Evangelical UCC on Clay Street.

Our Executive Board commissioned artist Emma Dale Drulis to create an "Kahok Indian" sculpture as our class gift to the school. One of her sculptures is also located over the entry of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. To earn funds for the $500 gift, we collected class dues, and the Senior Executive Board sponsored various fund-raising activities. This class gift is currently housed in the CHS library.

About this website and our reunion committees. . .

  • Bill Monroe created the first Google "Class of 1970" website in January 2010 in anticipation of our 40th Class Reunion. He soon passed the responsibilities to me, Carol Loyet Hauer; I expanded, revised, and updated it through the years. Because the site was not mobile-friendly, I created this new Google site in September, 2020. Jim Hauer created our new class website logo. Enjoy!

  • We thank our many classmates and friends who have volunteered throughout the years to organize our class reunions. Because classmates have had so much fun at the reunions, we added informal Birthday Bashes at the Blum House during the Italian Fest! Each event finds more "first-time" classmates, and our attendee list keeps on growing!

  • The current reunion committee consists of the following members: Jo Carol Abert, Bev Burris, Mick Gnavi, Jim & Carol Hauer, Paul Loucks, Mike Ray, Paul Reed, Pam Turner, and Kathy Wein.
